Synopsis
James Hawkins, 13, is not looking forward to another boring summer in Montauk, Long Island where he helps his mom run a motel. But all of that changes in a heartbeat when he discovers a mysterious man washed up on the beach, disoriented and in fear for his life from a “one-legged man.” James and his new friends, the twins Morgan and Max who are visiting the summer hot-spot from their home in NYC, begin to suspect that the disoriented Billy Bones is, in fact, a real pirate from the 18th century. As they follow clues to Billy’s origin, James, Morgan and Max become the target of the ruthless treasure hunter, Kinkade, who will stop at nothing to find Billy. Pursued by Kinkade across the sea, the dingy with James, Max and Morgan aboard is sucked into a whirlpool and destroyed, but the kids crawl out of the surf. But the beach is covered with snow drifts. It is no longer summertime, and they have landed nearly 300 years in the past, where the first person they encounter is a man with the wooden leg. And so begins a swashbuckling adventure they never could have imagined.
As part of the ELA curriculum, classrooms can compare and contrast this modern re-imagination of the classic novel with the original and easy-to-follow abridged versions. Appropriate for 6th to 8th grade levels.
